bravado could save us. If I had a friend

she’d mix her liquor with me,

then hold my long hair back above the sink.

I’d admire her unladylikeness

when ladylike meant warping yourself

into what was seemly and convenient

for the world. There’d be no dissembling

about her, this friend who’d give me a mod ensemble

when she had precious little, who’d cry

for living things—turtles, fish—who can’t cry

for themselves when damaged.

If I had a friend back then—traveler, pilgrim, shadow—

he’d throw a scarf over his bedside lamp

to cast a lubricated glow and rock
